Abstract

In India, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 strongly advocates the incorporation of digital platforms and open learning systems to promote access, equity, quality, and learner-centered education. With specific reference to the objectives of NEP 2020, this review-based study examines the role of digital technologies in transforming teaching-learning practices and evaluation methods through SWAYAM online learning platform. Drawing upon existing research, and policy documents, the paper analyses how SWAYAM facilitates a transition from conventional classroom-based education to flexible digital learning ecosystems. The review highlights important features of SWAYAM, including structured course design, learner-friendly navigation, multimedia instructional content, interactive discussion forums, progress tracking, and transparent certification mechanisms. Emphasis is placed on the platform’s contribution to pedagogical transformation through learner-centered, self-paced, and collaborative learning models designed for online education. The study further explores the advancement of evaluation and assessment practices on SWAYAM, focusing on continuous formative assessment, automated feedback or grading system, proctored examinations, and continuous performance monitoring. These digitally enabled evaluation mechanisms closely reflect NEP 2020’s vision of performance-based assessment by promoting transparency, continuous feedback, and quality enhancement in higher education. The study concludes that digital platforms like SWAYAM have strong potential to transform education by modernizing teaching practices and changing the way evaluation is done. This platform also helps to create a more inclusive, flexible, and quality-focused higher education system in India.

    Dr. Binayak Dey is an education researcher with academic and administrative experience in Open and Distance Learning (ODL), quality assurance, and higher education administration. He is currently associated with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), University of Kalyani. He completed his PhD in Education from Regional Institute of Education, NCERT Bhubaneswar. His research interests include MOOCs, educational technology, inclusive education, educational psychology, student learning outcomes, and ODL systems. Dr. Dey has published several research papers in peer-reviewed journals on MOOCs, learner motivation, ICT integration, and quality assurance in education. He has also participated in various national-level faculty development programmes related to online teaching, MOOCs, and ICT-enabled learning.

    Prof. Bhujendra Nath Panda is a former Professor of Education and the former Head and Dean of Research at the Regional Institute of Education, NCERT, Bhubaneswar. With 38 years of teaching experience, his career spans prominent institutions such as Utkal University, Arunachal University (now Rajiv Gandhi Central University), Kurukshetra University, and the Regional Institute of Education, NCERT, Bhubaneswar. Prof. Panda’s academic contributions are substantial, including seven books, over a hundred research papers, twenty-five research projects, about two hundred papers presented at national and international seminars and conferences, and the supervision of over forty Ph.D. candidates. He has also delivered over 300 invited talks. His areas of expertise include Teacher Education, Assessment and Evaluation, Research Methods, and Psychology of Education.
