Abstract

Multidimensional poverty goes beyond income poverty and includes the overlap of disadvantages in economic resources, living conditions, assets and social and institutional access. This study looks at the factors driving multidimensional poverty of 400 rural households in Ramban and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and multivariate logistic regression were used for the identification of the socioeconomic characteristics associated with deprivation. The regression model is statistically significant (Wald χ²(18) = 81.79, p < 0.001; pseudo-R² = 0.334). The results show that monthly income, non-agricultural business ownership, house ownership, livestock ownership, ownership of a bank account and membership of a women's self-help group were found to be significantly related with reduced odds of deprivation. Age, agricultural land ownership, household debt, social activity and family type, on the other hand, have positive associations. Household debt is the most strongly associated with deprivation (OR = 6.192, p < 0.001). The study suggests the policies of livelihood diversification, financial inclusion, productive assets, debt management and institutional support, to alleviate multidimensional poverty in rural Jammu and Kashmir.
