Abstract

India’s agricultural sector possesses immense potential in global trade; however, its export performance continues to be constrained by significant post-harvest losses and infrastructural deficiencies. One of the most critical challenges in this context is the inadequacy of cold chain infrastructure, which directly affects the quality, shelf life, and international competitiveness of perishable agricultural commodities. The present study investigates the role of cold chain infrastructure as a key growth driver for India’s agricultural exports by utilizing both primary data from 200 respondents and secondary data obtained from government reports, international organizations, and published research sources. The study adopts a descriptive and analytical research design to evaluate the existing status of cold chain facilities, analyze trends in agricultural export performance, and assess the impact of cold chain infrastructure on reducing post-harvest losses and enhancing export competitiveness. The findings indicate that cold chain capacity in India remains insufficient and unevenly distributed, with limited integration across perishable agricultural supply chains, leading to post-harvest losses estimated at nearly 25–30 percent. Further analysis reveals a strong positive relationship between cold chain development and agricultural export growth. Commodities supported by organized cold chain systems demonstrate improved quality preservation, longer shelf life, better price realization, and enhanced compliance with international quality standards. Although policy initiatives such as those implemented by APEDA and other government agencies have contributed to infrastructure development, notable gaps persist in accessibility, operational efficiency, and regional coverage. The study concludes that cold chain infrastructure is a vital enabler of export-oriented agricultural development. Strengthening cold chain systems through integrated infrastructure planning, technological innovation, investment support, and effective policy implementation is essential for reducing post-harvest losses and improving India’s competitiveness in global agricultural markets.
