Abstract

Smart Cities have emerged as an important approach to addressing urban challenges through the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), sustainable development, urban planning, innovation, and effective governance. This study aims to examine the evolution, major research themes, influential contributors, and emerging trends in Smart City research. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus-indexed publications from 2010 to 2025. The search conducted on 27 June 2025 initially identified 371 publications, of which 315 relevant articles were selected for analysis. Data were analysed using RStudio, the Bibliometrix package, and Biblioshiny. The findings reveal a significant growth in Smart City research, particularly after 2015. Smart City, ICT, sustainability, urban planning, and governance emerged as dominant themes. The study also identifies influential authors, journals, countries, and highly cited publications, providing insights into the intellectual development and future research directions of the field.
