Abstract

The transition towards electric mobility is gaining momentum in India, driven by government policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable transportation. This study provides a comparative analysis of three key initiatives – FAME I, FAME II, and the Electric Mobility Policy Scheme (EMPS) 2024 – with a special focus on their impact on Electric 2-Wheelers (E2W) sales. FAME I laid the foundation by offering subsidies and infrastructure support for electric vehicles, while FAME II expanded its scope, enhancing subsidies and focusing on charging infrastructure. EMPS 2024 introduces a more aggressive policy framework with stricter emission targets, enhanced incentives for E2Ws, and a push for indigenization in manufacturing. Through a comparative evaluation, this paper examines the effectiveness of each policy in accelerating the adoption of E2Ws, highlighting key challenges such as the high cost of batteries, charging infrastructure gaps, and consumer awareness. The study also explores the potential of EMPS 2024 to further drive electric mobility and its alignment with India’s broader climate goals. The findings contribute to understanding the role of policy in shaping the electric vehicle market, providing insights for future strategic decisions.
